The Cappy Smart Band was formed in the late 1800's by Calgary Fire Department Chief James "Cappy" Smart. Initially the Band entertained the citizens of Calgary at ice cream socials, the opera house and other venues. When band members volunteered for service in the First World War, the Band disbanded.
The Cappy Smart Band was reformed in 1993. Currently the Band has roughly 50 musicians from the Calgary area. the Band enjoys playing for Calgary Fire Department events. As well, the Cappy Smart Band performs concerts on their own and in conjunction with other non-profit organizations. The Band has enjoyed playing at the World Police and Fire Games in Calgary, Spain and Australia and has also travelled to other countries sharing their music. Most recently the Cappy Smart Band travelled to Nova Scotia and PEI and enjoyed playing in concerts with other community bands.
