Volunteering with EVNA

We are always looking for volunteers to help out with various sub-committees and special events. If you are interested in getting involved, meeting new people and having fun doing it, please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@yycEVNA.org or directly to one of our committees listed below. EVNA needs Directors at Large

Contribute to the board, without taking on a specific leadership role. Any Member who is eighteen (18) years of age or older, who is interested in fulfilling the commitment as a Director and is a member of EVNA in good standing may be nominated for election or appointment.

Qualification/Expectations:

  1. The ability to commit and attend monthly board meetings.
  2. Volunteer for committee work as applicable.
  3. Interest in promoting community vitality and partnerships between residents, businesses and service providers.
  4. Represent EVNA at community events as required.


East Village Street Fair

As a neighbourhood association, each year we are in need of volunteers to help us run the EV Street Fair on July 1 (Canada Day). We are looking to fill the following positions:

  • Set Up 
  • Take Down 
  • Puppy Zone 
  • Family Area 
  • First Aid/Lost Persons Booth 
    (Must have First Aid & CPR Training)
  • Beer Garden 
    Bartender (Must have ProServe) & support crew

Volunteers will be scheduled their choice of 4-hour shift. Also, we will be holding information sessions/training for all coordinator positions in the two weeks prior to the event.

EVNA's Committees

Our committees are the driving force behind EVNA. This support from our community members brings in different backgrounds, values, viewpoints and wide-ranging abilities. Pooling of our shared knowledge and experience allows us to achieve more, motivates forward momentum and improves the quality of decisions we make in our continued effort to improve services and facilities for our EV neighbours.


Garden Committee

The Garden Committee is a standing committee whose goal is to oversee the general administrative functions and operation of the Crossroads Community Garden and is comprised of our Garden Coordinator and EVNA Members who have leased a garden plot.

The role of the committee is to ensure that the organization has in place effective management policies, procedures and systems to ensure the effective and fiscally responsible operation of the garden. This committee is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the garden and associated facilities. In addition, it is to report as required to Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and the EVNA Board.

The functions of the committee include:

  • To review applications by interested gardeners and ensure that applications meet the criteria for being a gardener.
  • To ensure that all planting and maintenance of individual plots is done as per the regulations established by the Association
  • To allocate plots and collect all fees associated with the Garden
  • To provide an annual budget for the operation of the garden to the Board.
  • To provide the Association with a list of the plot number, name and contact information of the person/family assigned to each space.
  • To provide a monthly written report to be included with the Association’s board minutes. This report must include a comparison of budget amounts to actual spent to date, in addition to any normal committee report information.
  • To keep timely financial records.
  • To liaise with the Board of Directors

Events Committee

The Events Committee is a standing committee whose goal is to plan and operate an annual series of events to be held in East Village to provide our residents opportunities to meet and socialize.

The role of the committee is to ensure that the organization has in place effective management policies, procedures and systems to ensure the effective and fiscally responsible operation of the events.

The functions of the committee include:

  • To generate concepts and ideas for the events.
  • To plan and execute the events including the securing of all permits and permissions required to hold the events
  • To work with any partners involved in the event.
  • To provide an annual budget for the operation of the events to the Board.
  • To provide a monthly written report to be included with the Association’s board minutes. This report must include a comparison of budget amounts to expenses incurred, in addition to any normal committee report information.
  • To keep timely financial records.
  • To liaise with the Board of Directors.

Marketing Committee

The Marketing Committee is an advisory committee that works to expand EVNA’s presence, enhance its image & credibility throughout Calgary by acting as a sounding board for marketing strategies and tools, develop and hone innovative ideas, and helps develop events, campaigns, and community initiatives. It also supports any grant or funding applications and provides feedback on communications, materials, and is the driver of our social media presence.

Planning Committee

The EVNA Planning Committee is to review all applications for land use re-designation (rezoning), subdivision, and development permits to provide feedback to the applicants as to how their application fits — or could better fit — within the community’s values and vision for its growth. Additionally, the committee is to take proactive opportunities to affect change in East Village by addressing issues such as traffic, parks, heritage conservation and community improvements.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee is a standing committee whose goal is to ensure that the board of directors fulfils its fiduciary responsibility relating to: financial auditing and reporting, financial policies, and financial risk management to ensure the effective operation of the organization.

The role of the committee is to ensure that the organization has in place effective fiscal management policies, procedures and systems to ensure the effective and fiscally responsible operation of the organization. This committee will be responsible for policy research and development and maintenance of organizational policies such as audit, financial reporting and accountability, and investment.

The functions of the committee include:

  • To review monthly financials statements of the Community Association
  • To review the annual budget of the Community Association prior to its introduction to the Boards
  • To receive and review the audited financial statements of the Community Association and report to the Board prior to the AGM
  • To research, review, develop and propose organizational policies and procedures relating to fiscal management.
  • To liaise with the Board of Directors

Revitalization Committee (2020; Concluded)

The Revitalization Committee was a committee established to review and examine the functioning and operations of the East Village Neighbourhood Association (EVNA) for the purpose of how these can be clearly established, committed to, and communicated for the revitalization of EVNA.

The duties and responsibilities of the committee were to review, revise, and establish clear positions, processes, procedures, and policies for EVNA’s Board of Directors.  These were to address financial operations, use of technologies, marketing and communications, the role of EVNA within the East Village community, and the relationships with East Village residents, partners, and neighbouring communities.  

In addition, the committee was to investigate and implement with the approval of the board a rebranding of EVNA, and within that new brand make recommendations for new communication tools and protocols to use to renew community engagement.

The committee was to capture and document these positions, processes, procedures, and policies in an EVNA Manual/Handbook.
